Following the collapse of their marriage over Abi’s affair with Carl Webster, Wednesday night’s episode showed Abi desperately trying to convince herself that her new relationship is secure. But cracks were already showing.

The episode began with Abi gently confronting Carl about their life together, admitting that their day-to-day existence feels bleak and emotionally distant. Carl brushed it off, blaming work pressure and trotting out the now-familiar claim about “managing Debbie’s dementia” — a lie he has used repeatedly to manipulate the situation.

He attempted to smooth things over by promising a romantic afternoon, leaving Abi hopeful as she dropped Alfie at nursery before heading home.

When she returned, the flat was covered in candles and Carl was full of soft apologies and nostalgia, eager to remind her of how “special” their connection supposedly is. He even switched his phone off to guarantee no interruptions.

Kevin arrived unexpectedly with Alfie in his arms, explaining that the nursery had been calling repeatedly because the toddler was unwell — and Abi hadn’t answered. Seeing Abi dressed for romance while he held their sick child pushed Kevin over the edge.

In a furious confrontation, Kevin accused Abi of being unreliable and putting Alfie at risk.
