Emmerdale fans are still reeling from Kev Townsend’s explosive—and off-key—housewarming party moment, but now actor Chris Coghill has lifted the curtain on what really happened behind the scenes… and why filming it was one of the most “excruciating” moments of his career.

The Shameless and EastEnders alum made his Emmerdale debut earlier this year as Kev, the surprise “prison husband” of Robert Sugden. As longtime fans know, Robert (played by Ryan Hawley) has been trying to rebuild his life after years of heartbreak and incarceration—especially with former flame Aaron Dingle back in the picture. But Kev’s arrival in the village turned that fragile peace into a storm of secrets, emotional manipulation, and unexpected declarations of love.

A Lie, A Song, A Sobering Truth

Initially, viewers were led to believe Kev had been released early on compassionate grounds due to terminal illness. Robert, riddled with guilt and emotional confusion, agreed to rekindle their prison romance and even took part in an intimate vow renewal. But the real twist? Kev isn’t dying at all. His release was standard. The illness? A fabrication meant to hold onto the only man he believed ever truly saw him.

The emotional climax came during the November 18 episode when Kev crashed a housewarming at Dale View—home to Vinny Dingle, Lewis, and Ross Barton. Drunk, devastated, and desperate, Kev seized the mic and delivered a painfully raw rendition of Daniel Bedingfield’s “If You’re Not the One.”

As Robert looked on—part amused, part anguished—Kev sang his heart out in front of half the village, ending the performance by begging Robert to take him back. The moment was both comic and tragic: a man clinging to love in the only way he knows how—public spectacle.

While viewers were only treated to snippets of the emotional karaoke moment, Coghill took to Instagram to post the full, uncut version of his “utterly excruciating” performance, admitting he only sang it once, in full, and “under extreme duress.”

“The answer is I did the full song all the way through once,” Coghill wrote. “SO… under extreme duress from production here is the most utterly excruciating 4 f**kin minutes of my life…”

With emotions running high and his lies now exposed, will Kev disappear from the Dales—or dig in deeper and go darker? Either way, actor Chris Coghill has cemented Kev as one of Emmerdale’s most unexpectedly magnetic new characters in years.

And judging by the response online, he’s not going anywhere just yet.
