“I didn’t even audition,” Reilly recalled. “Then I was like, ‘F**k, I didn’t audition.’ I was terrified, because I didn’t know how I was going to do it. And it took me a minute to find her.”

Playing the Opposite of Herself

Beth Dutton might be fearless, unpredictable, and emotionally explosive—but Kelly Reilly is none of those things in real life. That contrast made the role even more complicated. “It’s very energizing,” Reilly explained. “But it’s also incredibly gnarly. I have to hide all of me away to put some of that on.”

Despite the intensity, Reilly has found a deep connection to Beth. “I love her,” she said. “But I can’t live with her.”
