Before Yellowstone became a phenomenon, Kevin Costner nearly walked away.

Early Doubts From a Hollywood Legend

When Yellowstone premiered in 2018, few could have predicted just how big it would become. At the center of its success was Kevin Costner, stepping into the role of John Dutton. His presence gave Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western instant credibility. But behind the scenes, the Oscar-winner admitted he wasn’t entirely confident.

In a 2019 interview with Good Morning America, Costner revealed that he felt uneasy when the show evolved from a limited miniseries into a full-scale series. “Suddenly, it was going to be a multi-season,” he explained. “And I thought, actually, if I would have said, ‘Well, now I’m not doing it,’ that maybe it might have crumbled before it got started. And I kind of took the weight on emotionally of not wanting to have the show crumble.”

Is Kevin Costner's Yellowstone documentary good history? Not so much.

Costner’s Honest Admission at the Table Read

His fears weren’t just private. Co-star Denim Richards, who played ranch hand Colby Mayfield, remembered what Costner told the cast during their very first table read. “I don’t know about you guys, but I’m scared as hell,” he confessed. “So why don’t we come together the best we can, and make this happen, and support each other.”

That sense of unity helped carry Yellowstone through five seasons and turned it into one of cable TV’s biggest hits.

Walking Away From the Role He Built

Ironically, the fear that once kept Costner committed eventually became reality. By Season 5, the actor chose to leave the series behind. While he filmed the first half of the final season, he exited before the last six episodes to focus on his passion project — the Western epic Horizon: An American Saga.

The decision forced Sheridan to make a bold narrative move: John Dutton dies off-screen at the start of Part 2. The story then shifts to his family grappling with loss, betrayal, and survival. Fans were divided, with many frustrated that Sheridan didn’t craft a more fitting exit for such a central character.

A Gamble That Didn’t Fully Pay Off

Costner’s departure was tied to scheduling conflicts, but fate wasn’t kind to his gamble. Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1 underperformed at the box office in 2024, and its sequel was indefinitely delayed. Meanwhile, Yellowstone powered through to its conclusion without its patriarch.

Despite the controversy, the franchise didn’t end. Sheridan’s universe continues to expand with spinoffs like 1923, Y: Marshals, and the upcoming The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell.

Legacy of John Dutton

Kevin Costner may have stepped away, but his portrayal of John Dutton remains the cornerstone of Yellowstone’s legacy. His early fear of letting the show “crumble” never came true. Instead, he helped build one of television’s most powerful dynasties — even if he chose not to see it through to the end.
