Ultimately, he decided that Yellowstone had that spark, adding: “I didn’t predict that it would be a runaway success, but I’m not surprised at all that people do like it to the degree that they have liked it.”
Costner’s instincts paid off. The show became a cultural phenomenon, spawning spin-offs and a franchise that continues to expand.
John Dutton’s Controversial Exit
Despite the show’s success, Costner’s journey with Yellowstone ended with controversy. His character, John Dutton, was killed off in season 5, and reports suggest multiple reasons for his departure: scheduling conflicts, creative differences with Sheridan, contract disputes, and legal complications.
