Emmerdale Twist: Louise Jameson’s Real-Life Injury Written Into Mary Goskirk’s Storyline

Mary Appears With a Walking Stick

In Monday’s upcoming episode of Emmerdale (September 22), fans will notice a surprising change in Mary Goskirk. Usually full of energy, Mary is suddenly seen behind the Woolpack bar with a walking stick.

While serving drinks, she hands Tracy a glass of wine. Tracy immediately asks if she has had a fall. Mary responds with her trademark humor: “No, did it bungee jumping!”

This witty line wasn’t just a throwaway joke. It cleverly explained why the character needed support, after actress Louise Jameson suffered a real-life accident earlier this year.

The Injury Behind the Scenes

Back in May, Louise Jameson revealed that she had taken the phrase “break a leg” quite literally. The actress confirmed she had been treated at Leeds General Infirmary and was recovering in a splint.

The injury forced her to delay several performances of her one-woman show Shakespeare’s Mistress, which blends dramatic readings with reflections on her long career. Those postponed shows are now rescheduled for October and December.

Louise Jameson’s Legendary Career

Louise isn’t just an Emmerdale fan favorite. She is a classically trained theatre actress and a television icon. Many remember her as Leela in Doctor Who during the 1970s. She still voices the character for audio dramas today.

She also starred as Rosa Di Marco in EastEnders, appearing in 239 episodes, and has a long list of other TV credits. In fact, her connection to Emmerdale goes way back. She played the soap’s very first murder victim, Sharon Crossthwaite, in 1973 when it was still called Emmerdale Farm.

Mary Goskirk’s Journey in the Dales

Since joining Emmerdale in 2022, Mary has quickly become a popular character. She first arrived in the village to support her daughter, Rhona, after Marlon’s stroke. Soon after, in a touching moment with Kim Tate, Mary came out as gay—something she had hidden during her marriage. Producers called the storyline “vital,” highlighting how rare it is to see later-life coming out stories on television.

Since then, Mary’s search for love has been filled with heartbreak. A romance ended in betrayal when the woman she loved turned out to be a fraudster. Later, the limo crash revealed her secret love for Suzy Merton. Vanessa was furious to discover that Mary shared Suzy’s final kiss, causing a rift that drove Mary to briefly leave the village.

A Future Full of Possibilities

Now back in the Dales, Mary is once again part of village life, even as she navigates the challenges of her injury. Fans admire both the resilience of the character and the strength of the actress who brings her to life.

Louise Jameson’s presence has enriched Emmerdale with humor, heart, and history. Whether she’s delivering sharp one-liners or facing personal heartbreak, Mary Goskirk remains one of the show’s most compelling figures.
