Michelle Ryan: From EastEnders Icon to Hollywood Hopeful and Back Again

It was a comeback few saw coming. After two decades away from the spotlight, Michelle Ryan returned to EastEnders this year, reprising her role as Zoe Slater, a character that once catapulted her to superstardom.

Why Michelle Ryan returned to her 'boring' EastEnders job after her bid to crack Hollywood was blighted by strikes and turning down a huge role (pictured on the show this year)

Rising to Fame on Albert Square

Michelle first joined EastEnders in 2000, quickly becoming part of one of the soap’s most iconic storylines. At just 16, she starred in the shocking revelation that Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) was Zoe’s mother, not her sister, delivering the unforgettable line: “You ain’t my mother!” The scene remains a landmark moment in the soap’s 40-year history, earning Michelle a place in British TV lore.

Despite her early success, Michelle decided to leave the show in 2005. At the time, she described the role as “boring” and framed the soap as an apprenticeship: “I always wanted to go on and do different things… I really do like my freedom and jumping from job to job.”

Indeed, Michelle wasted no time jetting across the pond in a bid to crack Hollywood and it wasn't long before she landed a role in the NBC reboot of Bionic Woman

Chasing Hollywood Dreams

Following her departure, Michelle wasted no time jetting across the Atlantic to pursue Hollywood. She landed a lead role in NBC’s reboot of Bionic Woman, portraying bartender-turned-cybernetic hero Jaime Sommers. But her big break was thwarted by the three-month Writers Guild of America strike, which halted production after just eight episodes. The remaining episodes were never filmed, and the show was quietly shelved.

She had a chance to return to Hollywood, being asked to audition for Boardwalk Empire, but she turned it down and the role was snapped up by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald (Kelly and Steve Buscemi pictured in the show)

Undeterred, Michelle returned to the UK, taking on roles such as the villainous Nimueh in BBC’s Merlin and guest-starring in Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead. She was later offered a chance to audition for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, but turned it down to avoid a lengthy contract. The role went to Kelly Macdonald, a decision Michelle later admitted was a “big mistake”, reflecting on the series’ multiple Emmy and Golden Globe wins.

Over the years, she appeared in independent films, including Cockneys vs Zombies, Girl Walks into a Bar, Frankenstein: Legacy, and the upcoming Finding My Voice.

Returning to EastEnders: A Homecoming

In June 2025, Michelle returned to Albert Square, describing the move as feeling like “coming home”. The timing aligned with the arrival of new executive producer Ben Wadey, who was keen to explore the potential of Zoe’s return.

Michelle explained her decision: “I’d already been thinking about a return… I saw that there was still a lot of love for the character, and when Ben pitched me the storylines, I knew it was the right decision.”

Her character’s comeback is set to be dramatic. Zoe is no longer the same girl who left Walford twenty years ago; she has been struggling on her own and is in desperate need of help, though whether she will accept it remains to be seen.

The same month she made her EastEnders return, Michelle was feeling regret about her missed opportunity, telling her followers that she'd just started watching Boardwalk Empire

Lessons Learned and Career Reflections

Michelle’s career has been defined by taking risks, stepping away from comfort zones, and embracing opportunities — even when they don’t go to plan. From iconic soap storylines to thwarted Hollywood dreams, her journey is a testament to resilience and adaptability in a tough industry.

With Zoe Slater back in Walford, fans can expect Michelle to once again make waves, reminding audiences why she remains one of EastEnders’ most memorable stars.
