Carver’s Emotional Exit in Chicago Fire

Jake Lockett, who joined Chicago Fire in season 11 as firefighter Sam Carver, became a fan favorite for his raw portrayal of a man balancing duty with the daily battle for sobriety. His bond with Firehouse 51 and his complicated relationship with Violet Mikami gave viewers plenty to root for.

In the season 13 finale, Carver realized that in order to protect his sobriety and keep himself on the right path, he needed a clean break. He applied for a position in Denver and told Violet of his decision. Their farewell was heartfelt and heartbreaking, ending with both confessing their love for one another and sealing it with a kiss.

The moment gave fans closure while also leaving the door cracked open for a possible return in the future.

Chicago Fire Season 13 Unexpectedly Writes Out A Character Ahead Of Carver & Ritter's Finale Exit

Why Did Jake Lockett Leave?

Unlike some past exits where actors pursued other projects, this departure wasn’t Lockett’s choice.

  • According to Deadline, NBC implemented budget cuts across its One Chicago shows in 2025.

  • Jake Lockett’s contract was among those affected, and his exit is believed to be financially driven rather than creative.

  • Daniel Kyri (Ritter) was also impacted — though Ritter is getting a proper send-off in season 14 before departing for good.

This means Carver’s exit was written to give the character a natural, respectful transition rather than killing him off or writing him out abruptly.

Did Carver Really Move to Denver?

That’s the lingering question fans had going into season 14. In the season 13 finale, the decision was clear: Carver intended to take the Denver position. However, given his chemistry with Violet and their emotional goodbye, there’s always the possibility that the writers could bring him back if budgets or storylines allow.

Still, for now, the expectation is that Carver did follow through with the move — marking a bittersweet but hopeful chapter for his character.
