‘Chicago Fire’ Showrunner Explains Stellaride’s Heartbreaking Twist: “This Shifts Things Around”

A Painful New Chapter for Stella and Severide

Chicago Fire Season 14 has returned with an emotional blow for fans of Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide. The long-time fan-favourite couple, affectionately known as Stellaride, began the season facing tragedy after it was revealed that Stella had suffered a miscarriage between the events of the Season 13 finale and the new premiere.

After last season’s storyline focused on the couple’s hope to start a family, the devastating twist left viewers heartbroken — and showrunner Andrea Newman says it was an intentional move to explore a deeper emotional layer in their relationship.

“There’s Guilt on Her Part”

Speaking to Collider, Newman explained that Stella’s complicated feelings about motherhood were central to the decision.
“What was so interesting about the dynamic was that Kidd had so many hesitations and questions about getting pregnant,” she said. “But when she found out she was pregnant, she told Severide about it, and the way he reacted had us all in tears. He was so happy, so joyous. That wiped away her doubts for a moment, but underneath, she was still struggling.”

Newman added that the miscarriage leaves Stella carrying a heavy emotional burden. “There’s guilt because she wasn’t sure it was something she wanted, even though he wanted it so badly. It’s a heartbreaking space for her to be in.”

A New Path to Parenthood

Despite their loss, Newman revealed that the couple’s journey toward starting a family isn’t over. The premiere introduced a social services worker with an unexpected proposal that could change everything for the couple.

“They’ve been through a lot together,” Newman teased. “This shifts things around, and very quickly. Now they’re headed into a different paradigm of family than they thought they were going to be. You don’t plan for parenthood — because things never go the way you think they will.”🌪evan on Twitter: "thoughts… " | Taylor kinney chicago fire, Chicago fire, Chicago justice

Firehouse 51 Faces Big Changes

Outside of Stellaride’s emotional arc, Chicago Fire Season 14 also brings major changes to Firehouse 51. With several members departing, Sal Vasquez (Brandon Larracuente) joins the team and immediately shakes things up.

According to NBC’s logline for Episode 2, titled “Primary Search,” fans can expect more personal and professional challenges:
“Vasquez fights to prove himself at 51. Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) pursue a troubling mystery. Herrmann (David Eigenberg) is on a quest to keep Molly’s profitable.”

What Lies Ahead for Stellaride

The tragedy will test Stella and Severide in ways they’ve never experienced before, but Newman assured fans that the pair’s love remains at the heart of the show. “They’re one of the strongest couples on Chicago Fire. What they’re going through now is painful, but it’s going to redefine what family means for them — and that’s a story worth telling.”
