Emmerdale Star Reveals He Was ‘Ready to Quit’ After Frustrating Filming Experience
Macaulay Cooper Opens Up About His Challenging Journey
Recently departed Emmerdale star Macaulay Cooper has revealed that he almost gave up before landing his role as the villainous Mike. The actor, whose final scenes aired on October 7, admitted that the self-tape process for his audition pushed him to the brink — and it was only thanks to his girlfriend’s encouragement that he kept going.
Taking to Instagram after his exit, Cooper reflected on the stressful experience, saying he was “ready to quit” after hours of retakes left him doubting himself.
“A very special thank you to my amazing girlfriend @abbiejonesxo,” he wrote. “Thank you for helping me prep, film, and not give up on myself during the self-tape process. After hours of filming the same scene over and over, I was ready to quit and send in whichever take was half decent. But you told me to go just one more time. That was the take that got me the recall and landed me the job.”
A Role That Tested His Limits
Though Cooper’s time on Emmerdale was brief — appearing in just five episodes — his portrayal of Mike made a major impact. The storyline saw Mike blackmailing Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) and threatening to expose him as gay to his new wife, Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham).
The harrowing plot reached its climax when Vinny bravely testified against Mike in court, finally bringing his abuser to justice. The emotional scenes earned praise for their authenticity but also sparked controversy due to their intensity.
The episode depicting Mike’s homophobic attack on Vinny led to 279 Ofcom complaints, with viewers objecting to the violent and disturbing content airing before the 9 p.m. watershed. Despite the backlash, the storyline was widely recognized for raising awareness about real-life hate crimes.
Leaving a Lasting Impression
In his farewell message, Cooper acknowledged the emotional weight of the storyline and expressed gratitude to the Emmerdale team for trusting him with such an important role.
“Playing the role of Mike, while challenging due to the character’s actions, was an honor,” he said. “This story—however difficult—is one that has unfortunately happened to people in real life, and I hope our portrayal helps bring much-needed awareness to this issue.”
He also thanked the cast and crew for their support:
“To the entire Emmerdale family — cast, crew, and casting department — thank you for welcoming me and for your hard work. What an incredible team.”
A Brief But Unforgettable Legacy
While Mike’s time in the village was short-lived, the impact of Cooper’s performance continues to resonate with fans. His portrayal added depth and realism to a sensitive storyline, demonstrating Emmerdale’s ongoing commitment to tackling difficult social issues.
For Cooper, what began as a frustrating audition process ended up being one of the most rewarding experiences of his career.
“I feel incredibly grateful for this experience,” he concluded. “It’s been one of my favorite jobs to date.”
