After weeks away from the Dales, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) is finally set to return—but his homecoming will be far from triumphant. Emmerdale has confirmed that Cain has been arrested in Dover, following his ill-fated mission to track down fugitive John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), the man responsible for Nate Robinson’s death.

Cain had left his family behind, determined to seek vengeance in France after John escaped with the help of Caleb Miligan (William Ash). But now, Moira’s worst fears have come true: her husband’s obsession has landed him in serious trouble.

Cain reappears in the Dales during Wednesday’s (October 15) episode, but fans should expect a very different man. “Cain finally comes back from his wild goose chase in France, but he’s an absolute mess,” a show insider confirmed. “He didn’t find John, and that failure has eaten him alive.”

Unable to cope with the guilt of losing Nate—or the fear that his son died hating him—Cain spirals into booze-fuelled grief. He’s angry, withdrawn, and unable to focus on anything except the son he couldn’t save.

“This feeling of fatherly shame fuels his self-destruction,” the insider added. “Even though Moira and his family desperately need him, he can only see his failure. He won’t rest until he feels he’s made it up to Nate, even though Nate would want him to move on.”
