ITV Moves to Trademark “Corriedale” as Soap Fans Theorize a Permanent Coronation Street and Emmerdale Crossover
The soap world is buzzing after ITV bosses officially filed to trademark the name “Corriedale,” fuelling speculation that the highly anticipated Coronation Street and Emmerdale crossover could become more than just a one-off special.
ITV Protects “Corriedale” Name Amid Crossover Hype
As first reported by The Sun, ITV has submitted an application to the UK’s Intellectual Property Office to secure rights to the name Corriedale. The trademark would cover television, streaming, and entertainment uses — effectively preventing others from capitalising on the title.
The filing has led many fans to believe ITV could be paving the way for future crossover projects between the two long-running soaps.
However, a spokesperson for Coronation Street clarified: “There are no plans for any further crossover episodes beyond the special episode of Coronation Street and Emmerdale, which is launching ITV1’s new scheduling pattern for the soaps in 2026. The trademark application is to protect the brand now that the name is in the public domain.”
What Is Corriedale?
The Corriedale special will unite the worlds of Weatherfield and the Yorkshire Dales for the first time in British TV history. Production is already underway, with Emmerdale and Coronation Street executive producer Kate Brooks describing the project as “a massive, unmissable piece of television.”
She teased: “Filming’s been brilliant. The actors are loving it because it’s so different from what they’ve ever done before. The mood and camaraderie are really infectious.”
Kate added that her own mother — a lifelong soap fan — would be “beside herself” watching her two favourite shows collide on screen.
Cast Confirmed: Familiar Faces from Both Worlds
Several stars have already been confirmed to appear in the crossover:
-
Jack P. Shepherd (David Platt, Coronation Street) revealed his excitement at joining the project, saying, “We get to work with all the Emmerdale lot shortly, it’s exciting. There’s no rivalry between us and them.”
-
Claire Sweeney (Cassie Plummer) will appear alongside him.
-
From Emmerdale, Jonny McPherson reprises his role as Dr Liam Cavanagh, becoming one of the first characters officially crossing between soaps.
Fans also noticed an early teaser when John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) appeared in Coronation Street on a background poster — a subtle clue hinting that the crossover had already begun.
A Logistical Feat with Emotional Payoff
Producers have described the crossover as one of the most ambitious collaborations ITV has ever attempted. With two separate production teams, filming schedules, and sets to coordinate, the project has been a major undertaking — but one that’s generating huge excitement across both fanbases.
Kate Brooks added: “Everyone’s worked so hard on this. The cast have been amazing, and it’s been a real feat logistically to get everything in the right place.”
When Will Corriedale Air?
The Corriedale special is expected to air in early 2026, coinciding with ITV’s new soap scheduling launch. Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, but insiders promise “explosive consequences” when the worlds of Weatherfield and the Dales collide.
Whether Corriedale becomes a recurring crossover event or remains a landmark one-off, it’s already shaping up to be a defining moment in British soap history.
