EastEnders Star Shona McGarty Splits from Fiancé After a Year of Engagement
Former EastEnders star Shona McGarty has reportedly ended her engagement to musician David Bracken, just a year after the couple got engaged in a romantic proposal at London’s Holland Park.
A Love Story Born Online
Shona, best known for her 16-year run as Whitney Dean on the BBC One soap, first met David two years ago through TikTok. The guitarist, who performs with the band Blessed, had reached out to the actress suggesting they record a duet together, unaware she was one of EastEnders’ most beloved stars.
Their friendship quickly blossomed into romance, and in 2024 David surprised Shona with a heartfelt proposal. But now, according to reports, the couple have decided to call off their engagement.

“They Wanted Different Things”
A source told The Sun that the split was mutual and drama-free. “They are on amicable terms but have ended their romantic relationship,” the insider said. “There are no hard feelings, they realised they wanted different things and are better off as friends. Shona is now focusing on her music and career.”
The actress has yet to comment publicly, but those close to her say she remains positive and focused on new creative projects.
Life After Whitney Dean
Shona made her emotional exit from EastEnders nearly two years ago after portraying Whitney Dean since 2008. Her final scenes were a heartfelt goodbye, as Whitney decided to leave Walford with Britney Wainwright and her baby daughter, Dolly, after discovering Zack Hudson had betrayed her with best friend Lauren Branning.
The moving episode featured the iconic Julia’s Theme music, signifying Whitney’s bittersweet farewell and symbolising a full-circle moment — she left the Square the same way she arrived.
Reflecting on her departure, Shona told RSVP Live, “I think she did get her happy ending. It makes sense the way she left on the bus, the way she came in. It was very fitting and quite nice, actually.”
Could Whitney Return?
Despite her exit, Shona has kept the door open for a potential return to Albert Square. Speaking earlier this year, she said, “I would absolutely go back to EastEnders — it’s 16 years of creating a family, I grew up on that show. I’ve got a really good relationship with EastEnders, the door’s open but at the moment, not yet.”
For now, the actress seems focused on her music career and personal growth. And while her engagement may have come to an end, Shona McGarty’s next chapter is only just beginning.
