Emmerdale Faces Ofcom Complaints Over Harrowing April Windsor Storyline
ITV’s Emmerdale has sparked controversy after airing distressing scenes involving teenager April Windsor, with more than 60 viewers issuing complaints to Ofcom. The episode in question, which explored grooming and coercion, has divided audiences — with some calling it “powerful” and others branding it “too disturbing” for a pre-watershed broadcast.
April’s Dark Ordeal
The emotional episode, which aired on Friday, followed April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) as she continued to spiral under the control of drug dealer Ray Walters (Joe Absolom). The 16-year-old has spent recent months trapped in a cycle of debt and fear, manipulated into selling drugs and taking dangerous risks to protect her family.

In the episode, Ray arranged for April to meet a man named Tim in a hotel room, hinting that the meeting would go beyond business. “I need this to go right, kid. Reputation is everything,” he warned chillingly.
Once alone, Tim pressured April to take drugs, urging her to “get in the mood” before commenting on her appearance and touching her back. When April resisted, he shouted after her: “Sit back down – you haven’t done what I paid for.”
The harrowing scene ended with April fleeing in tears, leaving viewers shaken — and prompting an influx of complaints.
Ofcom Confirms Viewer Complaints
According to The Mirror, Ofcom received 62 complaints about the episode, with most citing concerns that the grooming storyline was “inappropriate for pre-watershed viewing.”
The UK broadcasting regulator will now assess whether the scenes breached guidelines designed to protect younger audiences from distressing material before 9pm.
Viewers React: “Too Much for a Teen Character”
Fans took to social media to express their discomfort, with many arguing that the storyline went too far.
One viewer wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “So how long is this awful storyline with April & Dylan & the drugs baron going to go on for? #Emmerdale.”
Another added: “April is far too young for this part.”
A third echoed: “April being groomed is such a dark episode. Has she not been through enough already?”
Others described the scenes as “unnecessary” and “too disturbing,” questioning why such mature content was aired before the watershed.
Praise for Amelia Flanagan’s Performance
Despite the backlash, many viewers praised 17-year-old Amelia Flanagan for her brave and emotional portrayal of April’s trauma.
“What an episode,” one fan posted. “Absolutely outstanding. Amelia is an incredible young actress.”
Another added: “Hard-hitting and heartbreaking. April’s story is difficult to watch, but it’s highlighting real issues young people face today.”
ITV has not commented publicly on the Ofcom complaints but is known for working closely with child safeguarding experts when producing sensitive storylines.
A Risky But Relevant Storyline
While the episode has proven divisive, Emmerdale’s producers have defended their recent darker storylines as reflections of real-world dangers faced by vulnerable teens. The show has increasingly explored issues such as grooming, exploitation, and online abuse in recent years — with April’s arc intended to raise awareness rather than sensationalise trauma.
Still, as Ofcom reviews the complaints, the debate continues over how far soaps should go when tackling challenging material before 9pm.
