‘Chicago Fire’ Season 14: Showrunner Teases Exciting New Storyline for Violet After Carver Breakup
After several seasons of heartbreak and emotional rollercoasters, Chicago Fire season 14 will give Hanako Greensmith’s Violet a well-earned break from romantic turmoil — and according to showrunner Andrea Newman, fans can expect a lighter, more empowering side of the character when the NBC drama returns.
💔 Violet’s Fresh Start After Carver
Violet’s most recent romance — a short-lived connection with firefighter Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) — ended just as it began to blossom. In the Chicago Fire season 13 finale, Violet finally confessed her feelings, only for Carver to reveal he’d accepted a transfer to Denver. The bittersweet moment ended with a kiss — and a heartbreak.
“Violet has had some tortured relationships in the past and is coming off some serious heartbreak,” Newman told Us Weekly. “She’s not looking to get into any heavy, serious relationships to start the new season.”
That’s partly because Lockett, who played Carver, confirmed earlier this year that he won’t be returning for season 14 — though he hinted his story might not be over forever. Still, Newman made it clear that Violet isn’t dwelling on what might’ve been.
🎉 “Fun Is on the Docket”
This season, Violet’s focusing on herself — and fun is officially on the menu.
“It’s time to go out and just have a blast and not get caught up in anything that could lead to heartbreak,” Newman said. “Fun is on the lineup for Violet, for sure — and fun is always on the docket for [her partner] Novak. That’s her middle name.”
Newman teased that Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) — Violet’s energetic, free-spirited new paramedic partner — will be a major influence this year. Together, they’ll form a vibrant duo both inside and outside the ambulance.
“I see a lot of going out and having a good time, and that friendship bonding and blossoming as that happens,” Newman shared. “Their friendship is going to get even deeper.”
🚑 A Dynamic Duo in the Field
According to Christian Stolte (Mouch McHolland), the Violet–Novak pairing will be one of the highlights of Chicago Fire season 14.
“I really like Violet and Novak’s dynamic this season,” Stolte said. “They both have a sort of rapid-fire energy with dialogue where sometimes it’s like, ‘Okay, slow it down!’”
Newman echoed that sentiment, calling them “a great team together.”
“They’re so different,” she explained. “Violet is very rational and science-based — she’s not a big ‘let’s hug it out’ person. Novak, on the other hand, is incredibly empathetic with patients and connects with people easily. They balance each other beautifully.”
🔥 Who Is Lyla Novak, Really?
While Violet may be ready to rediscover her spark, her new partner will bring a little mystery to Firehouse 51.
“Every new character is a wild card coming into [the firehouse], and Novak has retained a little bit of that,” Stolte teased.
Newman confirmed that Novak’s backstory will be explored more deeply this year. “We don’t know Novak all that well,” she said. “So this season, we’ll get to turn some cards on her and learn a little bit more about who she really is.”
💫 What’s Next for Violet
While romance might be on pause for now, Chicago Fire fans can look forward to Violet rediscovering her independence — and maybe even finding joy in unexpected places.
After years defined by love, loss, and tragedy, season 14 will finally let Violet breathe, grow, and shine on her own terms.
“Violet deserves a little happiness,” Newman said with a smile. “And that’s exactly what we have planned for her this season.”
