Coronation Street Star at Centre of Red-Hot Romance Hints at Reality TV Debut

Amy Robbins opens up about her surprising on-screen kiss, her revived acting career, and which reality shows she’d love to join.

It’s been a whirlwind year for Coronation Street’s Amy Robbins. In just a few short months, her character Christina Boyd has gone from burying her husband to kissing the undertaker — and fans can’t get enough.

Viewers finally watched Christina share her first kiss with funeral director George Shuttleworth (played by Tony Maudsley), marking the start of a romance no one quite expected but everyone seems to enjoy.

Yet for Amy, 54, the storyline feels extra special. Not long ago, she believed her acting career might be over.Coronation Street star at centre of red hot romance hints at reality TV debut - The Mirror

“I Thought It Was the End”

Amy joined Coronation Street in January as barmaid Daisy Midgeley’s mum, but when actress Charlotte Jordan (who played Daisy) quit in May, Amy assumed that was the end of the road.

“When Charlotte said she was leaving, I thought my character wouldn’t have any use anymore,” Amy admits. “I’d finished filming and was on the brink of giving up acting. I started thinking about other things I could do.”

With her youngest daughter heading off to university and her husband, actor Bob Daws, downsizing their family home, Amy began to picture a quieter life.

Then, fate intervened.

“I got a call from Corrie over the summer saying they wanted Christina back — permanently. I couldn’t believe it!”

From Con Artist to Cupid

Fans will remember Christina’s rocky start on the cobbles, when she schemed with Daisy to con Jenny Connor out of £60,000. But her return brought heartbreak — and love.

In August, Christina came back to Weatherfield to bury her catfishing partner, Dom, using Shuttleworths Funeral Home, where George works. Their connection quickly blossomed into an unexpected romance, and Amy was thrilled to see her character finally find happiness.

“Christina has never really been loved,” she says. “George makes her feel cared for. She can’t believe her luck.”

“Kissing My Brother”

Off screen, Amy’s friendship with co-star Tony Maudsley made their romantic scenes amusingly awkward.

“It was like kissing my brother,” she laughs. “Tony and I have been friends for 25 years — we met doing My Beautiful Son back in 2001. I often stay at his place when filming, and our families are close. My husband Bob is friends with him too, so he doesn’t mind the on-screen kisses!”

Despite the initial nerves, the pair quickly settled into the romance. “From the minute we get on set to the moment we go home, there’s laughter and fun,” Amy adds.

A Second Chance and a New Confidence

Now a full-time member of the Coronation Street cast, Amy is relishing the opportunity to play a complex, older woman in love — and she praises the show for giving mature female characters the spotlight.

“There aren’t many parts for women my age, so I feel lucky,” she says. “Christina isn’t perfect, and neither am I. But that’s what makes her fun to play.”

Not all fans are rooting for Christina and George, though. Amy reveals she’s even been confronted in public.

“Someone came up to me on holiday and shouted, ‘Don’t you hurt our George!’” she laughs. “But Christina’s feelings are real. She’s genuinely in love.”

Reality TV Dreams

Away from the cobbles, Amy admits she’s open to trying reality TV — with a few exceptions.

“I’d love to go on MasterChef, absolutely! And Strictly Come Dancing would be wonderful, though I’ve never danced in my life,” she says. “But I’m a Celebrity? No. My niece Emily Atack did brilliantly, but I couldn’t top that.”

“If I Never Work Again, I’ll Still Be Happy”

Living in Bedfordshire with her husband and their blended family, Amy feels content both personally and professionally. Alongside acting, she volunteers with Samaritans, something she says keeps her grounded.

“It reminds me what really matters — family, friends, and being there when someone needs to talk. That’s what makes you rich.”

And as for her dream role? She’s already living it.

“I’ve wanted to be in Coronation Street since I was a little girl,” Amy says. “Now I’m here. If I never get another acting job again, I won’t mind.”
