Coronation Street Star Luca Toolan Lands Exciting New Film Role After Shock Exit
From Weatherfield to the Big Screen
Just nine months after his dramatic death on Coronation Street, rising star Luca Toolan has landed a brand-new film role — and it’s a far cry from the gritty streets of Weatherfield.
The 21-year-old actor, who made his professional debut as troubled teen Mason Radcliffe, revealed that he’s just wrapped filming on a medieval short film, marking his first major project since leaving the ITV soap earlier this year.
Speaking to The Sun, Luca couldn’t hide his excitement about stepping into a completely different world. “I just finished a short film — I’m loving life,” he said. “It was a dream come true. They built a whole set, they built me a sword from scratch. It sounds really nerdy but for me it was so fun.”
The actor added that he’s now auditioning for more film and TV projects, teasing that fans might see him “back on screens within the next six months.”
Mason Radcliffe’s Brutal Demise Shocked Viewers
Luca’s time on Coronation Street was short but unforgettable. His character, Mason Radcliffe, was introduced as a volatile teen caught up in gang violence — a storyline that ultimately led to one of the soap’s most shocking deaths in recent years.
Just as Mason began to turn his life around, tragedy struck. In devastating scenes that aired in January 2025, Mason was stabbed to death by his own brothers, Matty and Logan, during a fight in a local park. The weapon — Dylan Wilson’s knife — became the chilling link in a chain of heartbreak that mirrored Abi Webster’s own trauma from losing her son Seb in 2021.
The raw and emotional storyline struck a chord with viewers, and Luca’s performance earned widespread praise.
A Bittersweet Goodbye to Weatherfield
When his final scenes aired, Luca called his exit “bittersweet,” admitting he’d known Mason’s fate for almost a year but had to keep it secret.
“Of course when I first heard, there was a mixture of emotions because I was sad Mason was going to die,” he said at the time. “But equally, I was really excited and honoured to be part of this storyline because it’s an incredibly important issue that needs to be tackled.”
Reflecting on his first professional acting job, Luca described his Coronation Street experience as “an honour and a privilege.”
“I’ve met some of the most incredible friends I’ll cherish for life,” he added. “I’m at a loss for words to quantify what they mean and what this experience has meant to me. To the incredible army that makes this show — and all the supporters of it — thank you for making a lad’s dream come true.”
A Star on the Rise — and a Famous Family Connection
Luca may be a newcomer to acting, but the world of showbiz runs in his blood. He’s the son of Hits Radio DJ Mike Toolan, known for co-hosting alongside Gemma Atkinson (who herself starred in Emmerdale and Hollyoaks).
When Luca first joined Coronation Street, his proud dad celebrated the moment on social media:
“Luca has been unveiled as the new baddie (Mason) on Coronation Street. Absolute dream come true for him.”
Friendship and Support Behind the Scenes
Luca also opened up about the close friendship he formed with co-star Liam McCheyne, who plays Dylan Wilson. The pair shared some of the most intense scenes of Mason’s arc, but off-camera, their bond became one of genuine camaraderie.
“It really is amazing,” Luca said. “I feel very lucky because I’ve had Liam with me — he’s been like an older brother to me, even though he’s actually younger! He showed me the ropes, made me tea, and made the whole experience a lot easier.”
What’s Next for Luca Toolan?
With his Coronation Street chapter behind him, Luca is now focused on building a film and television career. His enthusiasm for his new medieval project — complete with custom-forged swords and elaborate sets — signals an exciting new direction for the young actor.
From the cobbles to castles, Luca Toolan’s journey is only just beginning. And judging by his talent, charm, and determination, his star is only going to rise higher from here.
