Coronation Street’s Amy Robins Reveals Family Connection and 25-Year Friendship with Tony Maudsley
Coronation Street actress Amy Robins has opened up about her surprising family ties to the soap — and her long-standing friendship with co-star Tony Maudsley, who plays George Shuttleworth.
Christina Boyd’s Return to Weatherfield
Amy recently reprised her role as Christina Boyd, mother of Daisy Midgeley, whose scheming past continues to haunt her. Fans last saw Christina caught up in a catfishing scam alongside Dom, only for Daisy to outwit her and escape with the cash.
When Christina returned to the cobbles in August, Jenny Connor was less than pleased to see her. Their tense reunion came with shocking news: Dom had died, forcing Christina to turn to undertaker George for help. Jenny didn’t believe a word — until she walked in on the heartbreaking truth.
A Real-Life Friendship with George
On-screen, Christina’s bond with George has sparked speculation. Off-screen, Amy revealed it’s given her the chance to work with an old friend.
“We’ve been friends for 25 years,” she said of co-star Tony Maudsley. “I first met him on a film called My Beautiful Son with Julie Walters, and we stayed in touch all these years. It was lovely when they put our two characters together.”
A Family Link to the Cobbles
For Amy, joining Coronation Street was almost fate. Acting runs deep in her family, and she revealed her brother Ted Robins appeared in the soap long before her.
“My brother Ted was here before me,” she explained. “He played Brendan Finch, the editor of a supernatural magazine, and had a romance with Mary Taylor. I now share a dressing room with Patti Clare, who plays Mary, and I said to her, ‘It’s funny to think my brother was your love interest.’”
Even more remarkably, Amy’s parents once appeared as extras on the cobbles, making Coronation Street something of a family tradition.
Loving Life Back on Corrie
Speaking about her latest return, Amy admitted she was thrilled: “This is my third or fourth return. My character Christina behaved so abominably the first time that I just couldn’t see anyway she’d come back. When they phoned me to ask me back again it was the happiest day. I went ‘woo-hoo!’ I love it so much.”
