Coronation Street’s Gareth Pierce Calls Todd and Theo’s Abuse Storyline “Unprecedented”
Coronation Street actor Gareth Pierce has opened up about his character Todd Grimshaw’s difficult new storyline with Theo Silverton, describing it as “unprecedented” for the ITV soap.
A Dark Turn in Todd and Theo’s Relationship
Todd and Theo’s romance began earlier this year, but in recent episodes, things have taken a worrying turn. Viewers have seen Theo become increasingly controlling, with his behaviour set to escalate in upcoming scenes.
Next week, Theo’s jealousy leads him to threaten Billy Mayhew, while Todd begins to realise that he may be trapped in an abusive relationship.
“Unprecedented” Focus on a Same-Sex Abuse Storyline
Speaking about the plot, Gareth Pierce explained:
“Coercive control and domestic abuse storylines have been played before in Corrie and in other soaps. But I think it’s fairly unprecedented that we’ve had this level of focus on an abusive same-sex relationship.”
He added: “The themes and dynamics within are universal, but we want to be sure that we’re truthfully depicting the way that the abuse can be slightly different or unique within the same-sex relationship as well.”
Todd’s Struggle to See the Truth
Asked if Todd already recognises Theo’s behaviour as abusive, Pierce said his character is still trying to justify it.
“There may still be a way that he can somehow convince himself that this is an exception rather than the norm of the relationship. It’ll probably dawn on him that it is an abusive relationship sooner than he finds the strength to end it.”
Working with Charities for Accuracy
The actor also stressed the responsibility that comes with tackling such an important storyline.
“Corrie has been working with several charities, including Stonewall and Galop, on Todd’s storyline,” he explained.
He noted how difficult it can be for men in abusive relationships to seek help, adding: “There are social pressures that might make two men feel that you’re a bloke, you should be able to sort it out yourself. Those narrow and archaic views of masculinity still sometimes pop up.”
What Happens Next?
Gareth confirmed that Theo’s behaviour will escalate further.
“There’s a moment coming up where he becomes physically abusive for the first time. A line has definitely been crossed; it will be hard to watch,” he revealed.
He added that financial control will also come into play: “It’s very frustrating for the audience… they’re a little further ahead than Todd in recognising what’s going on.”
