The Stroke That Changed Everything

Earlier this year, Cheryl experienced a sudden and alarming health crisis. While at home watching TV, she felt a severe headache at the back of her head and struggled to sleep. During a late-night trip to the bathroom, her balance completely failed, and her right side went numb, heavy, and tingling.

Recognising the seriousness of her symptoms, Cheryl contacted her son, Alex, who immediately called an ambulance. He had experience working with elderly people and quickly identified the warning signs of a stroke. Cheryl was rushed to Blackpool hospital, where doctors confirmed her worst fears: she had suffered a stroke.

The Challenges of Rehabilitation

The stroke left Cheryl unable to walk independently. “I have had to retrain my brain. I couldn’t even pick up a penny at first,” she admitted. The actress explained how the stroke impacted her coordination, balance, and hand movements. “You lose the ability to coordinate your hands, to walk properly, your balance is gone. It’s frustrating and makes you angry. But I’ve started to recover; I am coming on in leaps and bounds now.”

Despite the difficulties, Cheryl’s determination has been unwavering. With consistent effort, therapy, and support from loved ones, she has regained significant mobility, though she still relies on a stick for longer distances.

The chance meeting with a fan at her local shop offered inspiration and a reminder of her impact on others. “This lady said, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve just read your book.’ I went, ‘Oh, have you? How did you find it?’ She said, ‘You’ve had a life, haven’t you?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, a little bit,’” Cheryl recalled.

The actress hopes her journey will serve as a motivation for others in the industry and the public, showing that setbacks, no matter how severe, can be met with determination and optimism.
