Eight years after her dramatic on-screen death, EastEnders legend Rita Simons has once again found herself at the centre of comeback rumours. The actress, who played the iconic Roxy Mitchell from 2007 until 2017, has been teased for a potential return by none other than her famous uncle — The Apprentice’s Lord Alan Sugar.

Roxy and her sister Ronnie (Samantha Womack) met a tragic fate on New Year’s Day 2017 when both drowned in a hotel swimming pool, just hours after Ronnie’s wedding to Jack Branning. Their deaths devastated fans, sparking years of speculation about whether the sisters could ever return to Albert Square.

Roxy’s Ghostly Cameo

In April 2023, Rita briefly reprised her role in a special episode when Roxy appeared as a figment of daughter Amy’s imagination during therapy. The emotional scenes reignited fan calls for a permanent comeback — despite the character’s seemingly final demise.

Lord Sugar’s Suggestion: “Poxy Mitchell”

Now, in a light-hearted TikTok video, Lord Sugar has stoked the fire. Speaking directly to his niece, he joked that the only way she could return would be as a long-lost relative.

“There is no way you’re ever going to convince the BBC to bring you back into EastEnders,” he quipped. “So you’ve got to come back as a cousin of who you were. So, I don’t know who you were… Roxy?”

When Rita asked what her new character’s name might be, her uncle playfully suggested “Poxy Mitchell.”

Fans Still Hopeful

While Lord Sugar’s comments were clearly tongue-in-cheek, they’ve reignited hope among fans who continue to campaign for Roxy’s return in some form — whether as a twin, cousin, or surprise lookalike. Given the soap’s history of outlandish twists, many believe it’s only a matter of time before the Mitchell clan expands once more.

Soap bosses have remained tight-lipped on whether Rita Simons could make a permanent return. But with EastEnders gearing up for major storylines and anniversaries in the coming years, the door may not be as firmly closed as it seems.
