EastEnders Star Adam Woodyatt Pays Tribute to Steve McFadden’s Long-Awaited NTA Win
A Night to Remember at the NTAs
The National Television Awards 2025 were a landmark evening for the EastEnders cast. The BBC soap celebrated a major victory, scooping its fourteenth Best Serial Drama award, and saw a historic win for one of its longest-serving stars.
Amid cheers at London’s O2 arena, actor Steve McFadden, who has portrayed Phil Mitchell since 1990, finally walked away with his first NTA trophy. The moment left the audience on their feet—and his co-star Adam Woodyatt deeply moved.
Woodyatt’s Emotional Tribute
Adam Woodyatt, who has played Ian Beale since EastEnders first launched in 1985, admitted he had “no idea” someone had captured his raw reaction during the ceremony. He later shared the image online, describing the moment as nothing short of “magical.”
Posting to Instagram, Adam wrote: “I have no idea who captured this image, @aaronthiara_ found it and made it b/w but it just perfectly captures the moment Steve finally got the award he has deserved for so long. To see the whole audience standing to applaud him was magical.”
The actor later updated the post to credit photographer John Phillips for catching the powerful image.
Decades of Friendship on Display
The connection between Woodyatt and McFadden runs deep, with both men having shared decades on the iconic soap. Adam’s reaction, throwing his arms in the air in delight as Steve’s name was read out, showed the genuine bond between the two long-serving actors.
As Steve collected his award from presenters Michelle Ryan and Jessie Wallace—the duo who once played Zoe and Kat Slater—he fought back tears. It was clear how much the recognition meant to him after more than 30 years of dedication to the show.
A Family Win for EastEnders
The NTAs also saw the wider EastEnders family come together. Onstage, Rudolph Walker, who plays Patrick Trueman, described the cast as a “big family,” thanking fans for their continued support. The soap triumphed over rival dramas Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, and Casualty.
For many, Steve’s win was the highlight of the night. Known for his powerful performances in some of the show’s most iconic storylines, from Phil’s battles with addiction to dramatic family feuds, his award was long overdue.
Fans and Co-Stars React
Adam wasn’t the only one celebrating. The actor’s Instagram post quickly filled with comments from co-stars and fans alike.
Patsy Palmer, beloved for her role as Bianca Jackson, responded with clapping emojis and warm congratulations. Tamzin Outhwaite, who played Mel Owen, added: “Great shot! Congratulations to Steve and all of you.” Michelle Ryan, the original Zoe Slater, praised the image as “brilliant,” while Coronation Street’s Sally Ann Matthews called it “fabulous.”
Fans were equally emotional. One commented: “Makes me cry every time. It hit a nerve the way Steve holds himself in every storyline—just pure master of his craft.” Another added: “He absolutely deserved it after his outstanding performances.”
A Legacy of Dedication
For Steve McFadden, the award may mark a career highlight, but for the audience, it was recognition of decades of unforgettable performances. And for Adam Woodyatt, the sight of his close friend finally being honored was a moment to treasure.
The NTAs proved once again why EastEnders holds such a special place in British television. As the soap looks toward the future, the celebration of its past legends only strengthens its legacy.
