EastEnders Star Heather Peace Reflects on ‘Life Isn’t Easy’ After Cancer Battle and Award Win
A Journey Marked by Strength
EastEnders actress Heather Peace has spoken candidly about life after her breast cancer battle, telling fans that “life isn’t easy” while celebrating an “unexpected” honour at the Inside Soap Awards 2025.
Heather, who joined the BBC soap in 2021 as Eve Panesar-Unwin, has become a fan favourite thanks to her fiery character and the slow-burning romance with wife Suki Panesar, played by Balvinder Sopal. But this past year, her real-life journey has been far more dramatic than any storyline on screen.
A Battle Fought Together
Earlier in 2025, Heather revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The actress underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and recovery over the winter months before completing her treatment in May. Sharing her experience with fans, she admitted: “I’m forever changed. I’ve had the most precious time with my wife Ellie and our three girls, just trying to appreciate every moment.”
In a heartbreaking twist, Heather later disclosed that her wife, Ellie Dickinson, had also been diagnosed with breast cancer. While Ellie endured a lumpectomy and radiotherapy, Heather faced a more intensive path with a mastectomy and chemotherapy. The couple supported each other through their parallel journeys, often finding humour in the darkest moments.
An Unexpected Triumph
On September 29, Heather was crowned Soap Superstar at the Inside Soap Awards, a recognition that left her overwhelmed. Taking to Instagram, she wrote: “Thank you to everyone who voted for me. It was unexpected and feels like a full stop on this last couple of years. I appreciate every bit of support I’ve been given.”
She added: “I feel blessed. I feel thankful. I feel enriched from my experience, as weird as that sounds. To anyone embarking on the road I have travelled, I send you all my love.”
“Life Isn’t Easy”
Heather’s acceptance speech struck a chord with fans. “Life isn’t easy, but all the things that are thrown at us, I truly believe, shape us into being better versions of ourselves. Sending nothing but love to anyone reading this.”
Her words prompted an outpouring of praise from colleagues and friends alike. Lacey Turner, who plays Stacey Slater, called her “so cool,” while Clair Norris (Bernie Taylor) described the win as “well deserved recognition of what an amazing woman you are.” TV presenter Gaby Roslin added: “So well deserved. You are truly magical.”
More Than a Soap Star
Heather’s victory isn’t just about her acting—it’s a testament to resilience, honesty, and the ability to inspire others through adversity. While Coronation Street walked away with Best Soap, the night belonged to Heather, who showed that even in the toughest battles, moments of triumph can shine through.
