EastEnders star John Partridge opens up on the iconic Christian and Syed storyline, revealing bosses feared backlash.
Christian and Syed: A Love Story That Broke Barriers
EastEnders fans still remember the groundbreaking romance between Christian Clarke and Syed Masood – a storyline that captured hearts and challenged expectations when it aired in 2009. In a candid chat on Soap Scoop – Inside Soap’s weekly podcast, John Partridge, who played Christian, reflects on the enormous impact the storyline had and how the positive fan reaction defied the producers’ fears.
The plot followed Syed, a newcomer to Walford, risking everything to be with Christian despite his family’s objections and concerns about his Muslim faith. What started as a controversial romance soon became a universal story about love in impossible circumstances – something everyone could relate to, regardless of age, background, or beliefs.
Fear of Backlash
When EastEnders committed to the storyline, bosses braced for intense criticism. “It’s very difficult to tell a gay story at 7.30 in the evening without offending somebody,” John recalls. Security measures were so strict that police were even stationed at the actors’ homes early on, ensuring safety for the cast.
Despite these precautions, the audience response turned out to be overwhelmingly positive. Fans embraced Christian and Syed’s love story, proving that thoughtful, emotionally resonant storytelling could resonate widely – even in potentially sensitive contexts.
A Role That Changed Everything
John reflects on his audition for Christian: “They told me, ‘You read the worst, you are absolutely awful – but you are the part.’ They wanted someone who could carry the character naturally, beyond the script.” His portrayal not only earned critical acclaim but also created a lasting fandom, affectionately known as “Chryed,” whose members continue to celebrate the couple’s story years later.
The storyline culminated with Christian and Syed marrying and starting a new life in America, leaving a legacy that still inspires discussions about representation on mainstream television. John admits that Christian remains a massive part of his identity and career, stating, “I think we started something really big with the Chryed fandom and stories like theirs really kicked into gear after that.”
Beyond EastEnders
Even now, John continues to explore themes of love and sexuality through his theatre work. He stars in The Code, a 1930s-set play with former Coronation Street star Tracie Bennett, which explores closeted sexuality in Hollywood. Fans can see him on stage at the Southwark Playhouse until 11 October.
The actor also fondly recalls his time on Celebrity Big Brother in 2016 and remains grateful for the journey Christian Clarke helped him embark upon. Through candid interviews, John emphasizes the importance of authentic storytelling and the way it can foster empathy and connection across audiences.
