From Dales Romance to Real-Life Love Story

Laura joined Emmerdale in 2012 as the outspoken Kerry Wyatt, while Mark appeared two years later as Daz Spencer. Their characters’ paths crossed on set, and it wasn’t long before their friendship blossomed into something more.

Mark left the soap in 2019, though he made a brief return in December 2024. In real life, he and Laura have since welcomed two children — son Jesse and daughter Ronnie — while Mark also shares two older children, Poppy and Joseph, from his previous marriage to Happy Valley star Siobhan Finneran.

A Long Engagement and a “Chilled” Approach to Marriage

The couple got engaged in 2018 but have yet to tie the knot. Speaking to Digital Spy in 2024, Laura explained the long wait was down to life — and love — simply getting in the way.

“Something just kept happening,” she said. “Mark got a job away, then coronavirus happened, then I got a dog. I got pregnant. Then I got pregnant again! My stepdaughter said it’s the longest engagement in history!”

Despite the delays, Laura added that they’ve embraced a more relaxed attitude toward wedding planning:

“Time has made us go, ‘We don’t have to do anything lavish.’ We just want to be chilled now — maybe keep it small.”

Raising Awareness for Usher Syndrome

Away from the screen, Laura and Mark have become passionate advocates for families affected by Usher syndrome, a rare genetic condition impacting hearing and vision. Both their children have been diagnosed with the condition, and the couple have spoken candidly about their experiences to raise awareness and support ongoing research.

Their openness has inspired fans, with many praising their strength, honesty, and dedication as parents.

Still Going Strong

Ten years in, Laura and Mark’s relationship continues to thrive, proving that some of the best Emmerdale love stories happen off-screen.

“Wouldn’t change a thing,” Laura wrote — and fans couldn’t agree more.
