The Home and Away family continues to grieve the tragic loss of Johnny Ruffo, who passed away in November 2023 at just 35 years old. Now, two years on, his former co-star Lynne McGranger has shared a powerful tribute that has left fans in tears.

Known for his charm, talent, and cheeky smile, Johnny first captured hearts on The X Factor Australia in 2011. But it was his turn as Chris Harrington on Home and Away that made him a household name. On screen, he played a lovable goof with a knack for getting into trouble—but behind the scenes, he was a fighter battling one of life’s cruellest twists.

A Courageous Battle

Johnny’s life changed in 2017 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer after suffering intense migraines. Doctors discovered a 7cm tumour in his frontal lobe, and he underwent emergency surgery, followed by rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. For a time, there was hope—Johnny went into remission.

But in 2020, the disease returned. By 2022, he revealed the heartbreaking news that his diagnosis was terminal.

Through it all, Johnny showed incredible strength. His partner, Tahnee Sims, and his family stood by him during every step of the fight. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, with a tribute later posted to his Instagram:
“He battled all the way to the end… a beautiful soul with so much more to give.”

Lynne McGranger’s Heartfelt Goodbye

Lynne McGranger, who played Irene Roberts for over three decades, was one of Johnny’s closest co-stars during his time on the soap. Chris Harrington famously rented a room from Irene, and the two developed a charming on-screen bond—and an even stronger off-screen friendship.

This week, Lynne took to Instagram to mark the second anniversary of Johnny’s passing. She shared a photo of the two embracing on a sofa, both beaming. The caption read simply:
“Two years ago. Gone too soon my friend 💔.”

The post sparked an outpouring of love and grief from fans and friends alike. “A literal shooting star,” one commenter wrote. “What a life?! What a career?!”

Others sent virtual hugs to Lynne, remembering Johnny as someone who brought light into every room—and every scene.

A Legacy of Joy and Strength

Johnny appeared on Home and Away from 2013 to 2016, where his character Chris arrived looking for his brother Spencer and quickly became a fan-favourite. From misidentifying mushrooms in a risotto that nearly poisoned Alf and Leah, to forming close bonds with Irene, Chris was chaotic, loyal, and lovable—much like Johnny himself.

After Home and Away, Johnny remained a beloved public figure, known for his positivity, humour, and open honesty about his cancer journey. Even while fighting for his life, he never stopped inspiring others.

Now, as the Home and Away community continues to evolve, one thing remains true: Johnny Ruffo is deeply missed. And for those who knew him—onscreen or off—he’ll never be forgotten.
