Home and Away: Ben Astoni’s Struggle with Depression Shakes Summer Bay
For years, Ben Astoni has been one of Home and Away’s most grounded and dependable characters — a devoted husband, a steady father, and a pillar of calm in the chaos of Summer Bay. But in upcoming episodes, viewers will see Ben pushed to his emotional limits as his world begins to collapse, revealing a deeply personal and powerful new storyline.
From Family Man to Framed Suspect
Since arriving in the Bay with wife Maggie (Kestie Morassi) and their daughters, Ben (Rohan Nichol) has often been the voice of reason. That stability is shattered when he finds himself wrongfully accused of drug trafficking — a charge that threatens not only his freedom but also his sense of identity.
The once-confident family man begins to spiral, unable to comprehend how everything he built could be ripped away. As his life unravels, so too does his mental health, leaving Maggie and their daughters heartbroken as they watch the man they love fade into despair.
A Storyline Rooted in Reality
Speaking about the emotional storyline, actor Rohan Nichol shared how important it was to him to portray Ben’s battle with authenticity and care.
“I’m really grateful that the writers and producers trusted me with this,” Rohan explained. “Ben’s story reflects what so many men go through — that struggle to put into words what’s happening inside. It’s something that just takes hold, and it’s quite scary.”
Rohan revealed that he did extensive research to prepare for the role and drew from his own life experiences. “Acting is a tough profession. I’ve known people who’ve faced mental health struggles, and it was important to me that Ben’s journey felt real.”
Maggie’s Strength and the Impact on Family
As Ben’s depression deepens, the effect on his family becomes painfully clear. Maggie, played by Kestie Morassi, is left torn between love and helplessness as she tries to reach the man she married.
Rohan praised his on-screen partner for her depth and sensitivity in portraying Maggie’s perspective. “I’m really lucky it was Kestie I was working with,” he said. “She’s incredible. You always want to be able to pull it off, and she absolutely does. I hope the audience sees that, even through the darkness, Ben and Maggie are still completely committed to each other.”
He also noted how important it was for the show to highlight not just Ben’s experience, but how depression affects loved ones. “It’s a really full-on story on its own. Partners often feel powerless, and I think this storyline gives that reality the space it deserves.”
A Message Beyond the Screen
While Home and Away is no stranger to intense drama, Ben’s struggle offers something deeper — a reminder of how easily mental health challenges can emerge in even the most resilient people. Rohan hopes that by showing Ben’s vulnerability, the storyline encourages open conversations among viewers about depression and support.
“I’m proud of it,” he said simply. “This story needed to be told.”
