After more than three decades in Home and Away, Lynne McGranger has finally shared the truth behind her unexpected decision to leave the long-running Australian soap. A Bittersweet Farewell
Fans were left in tears last month when Irene’s final scenes aired in the UK. In a touching conclusion to one of Summer Bay’s most iconic stories, Irene decided to leave town and travel the world after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
It was an emotional farewell that resonated deeply with viewers, marking the end of an incredible 33-year run for McGranger, who first joined the soap in 1991.
“It Was Coming for a While”
Appearing on The Late Late Show with Patrick Kielty, Lynne admitted that her decision to leave wasn’t sudden — it had been building for quite some time. “To be honest, Patrick, it was coming for a while,” she confessed.
The star revealed that the real reason for her exit was exhaustion. “I was working 14-hour days, and I thought, ‘I’m too old for this,’” she said with a laugh. “I was exhausted. Everyone says, ‘You look so well now,’ and I say, ‘That’s what giving up Home and Away does to you.’”
Despite her trademark humour, McGranger made it clear that the decision was an emotional one. “It was hard to walk away from my friends,” she said, “but they’re still there. No one’s gone anywhere.”
A Family On and Off Screen
During the interview, Lynne spoke fondly about her long-time co-stars, confirming she remains close to Ada Nicodemou (Leah), Shane Withington (John), Emily Symons (Marilyn), and of course, Ray Meagher (Alf Stewart). “They’re family,” she said warmly.
In a statement following her departure, McGranger expressed her gratitude for her time on the show. “After almost 33 years in my dream role, working with people I love and respect, it’s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on the best and longest gig of my life,” she shared. “I am forever grateful to the writers and crew for everything they’ve done for Irene — and to the fans for their continued love and support.”

What’s Next for Lynne?
While she’s left Home and Away, Lynne hinted she has no plans to disappear from the public eye. For now, she’s taking time to rest and enjoy the freedom she’s earned after decades in one of television’s most demanding roles.
“I’m focusing on living life, enjoying time with family, and just… breathing again,” she said. “It’s been wonderful.”
After 33 years of tears, laughter, and life lessons in Summer Bay, Lynne McGranger leaves behind a legacy that will never fade — and a character fans will cherish forever.
