Home and Away’s George Mason Transforms Into Notorious Outlaw for New Aussie Thriller Run
Former Home and Away star George Mason is stepping into the shoes of one of Australia’s most infamous fugitives — Brenden Abbott, better known as The Postcard Bandit, in Binge’s gripping new crime series Run.
From Summer Bay Rebel to Real-Life Outlaw
Fans who remember George as Home and Away’s beloved bad boy Martin “Ash” Ashford will soon see him take on an even edgier role. In Run, the New Zealand-born actor leads the six-part series as Abbott — a master thief and escape artist whose daring heists and legendary jailbreak made him a household name in the 1980s and ’90s.
The series follows Abbott’s life on the run after his audacious 1989 escape from Fremantle Prison. Nicknamed The Postcard Bandit after he allegedly sent postcards to police while evading capture, Abbott spent years taunting authorities before his eventual arrest on the Gold Coast in 1995.
First Look at Run
In the just-released trailer, George brings the charismatic criminal to life, coolly robbing a bank and flashing his trademark charm as he quips:
“It’s been a pleasure doing business with you all today.”
Later, as he evades the law, he taunts:
“Cops have got no idea where I am. You don’t act like a fugitive, you don’t look like one.”
The series also stars Anthony Hayes (Mystery Road) and Lee Tiger Halley (Boy Swallows Universe), with direction by John Platt.
A Career on the Rise
George’s new role marks his most ambitious project yet. Since leaving Home and Away in 2018, where he played the rebellious yet big-hearted Ash, Mason’s career has steadily evolved.
After his emotional departure from the Bay — which saw Ash lose his partner Kat (Pia Miller) in a tragic car crash — George appeared in several acclaimed projects, including Jane Campion’s Oscar-winning film The Power of the Dog (2021), the drama One Night (2023), and the mystery thrillers Black Snow and The Survivors.
Speaking to TV WEEK at the time of his Home and Away exit, George reflected:
“It was hard to leave, but I was ready to move on. It was time to spread my wings and see what other opportunities are out there.”
Now, with Run, it seems he’s done exactly that.
When and Where to Watch
Run premieres exclusively on Binge on January 1, 2026, kicking off the new year with a pulse-pounding dive into one of Australia’s most extraordinary true-crime stories.
For fans of George Mason, this promises to be his most thrilling transformation yet — from the beaches of Summer Bay to the dark, dangerous world of The Postcard Bandit.
