Inside ‘Yellowstone’ Cast Friendships Amid Kevin Costner and Wes Bentley Fight Rumors

A shocking report alleges the costars had an altercation—here’s the truth about cast dynamics

Love may be in the air on screen, but that isn’t always necessarily the case in real life. How many Hollywood horror stories have you heard about co-stars who are lovey-dovey in front of the camera but actually despise one another? Yellowstone has a few of our favorite on-screen dynamics, from Cole Hauser’s Rip and Kelly Reilly’s Beth to Kelsey Asbille’s Monica and Luke Grimes’ Kayce—but does this cast get along behind the scenes, and did these dynamics lead to Kevin Costner’s unexpected departure? We investigate below.

Some of the cast serve as mentors

Jefferson White plays the part of Jimmy, and he has been one to give credit to his more experienced cowboy peers, singing their praise for the guidance and help they’ve given him over the course of his time on the show.

Of working with costars like Costner, Hauser and Forrie J. Smith, White told Screen Rant: “There’s so many amazing actors and cowboys on our set that I get to learn from…In this world, in both acting and in the western world, the world of horsemanship, as soon as you think you know it all, you’re wrong and you’re done and you’re limiting yourself.”

Does the ‘Yellowstone’ cast get along with Kevin Costner?

Despite the controversy that has surrounded Costner in recent years regarding his participation in the upcoming season of Yellowstone, the fact still remains that his costars have had nothing but praise for the Dutton patriarch over the years.

I’ve learned a lot about just being a gentleman on set and just a class act…He’s got [a] a family. I have three kids, a wonderful wife. And he’s just someone to look up to in my opinion,” Hauser told Fox Digital News in 2022.

Costner’s fictional son Kayce, played by Grimes, also gave a glimpse into the bond they share off-screen, explaining to Good Housekeeping that the veteran actor was always open to visitors by his trailer, saying, “He’s got a fire pit, and he’s a musician, so he’s always got a guitar around and won’t hesitate to play you a song. He does a really good job of taking the pressure off what a huge icon he is.”

However, recent reports made by The Hollywood Reporter say differently. In a recent article the outlet claimed that Costner and Bentley got into a physical fight after the latter claimed that he thought the show was becoming too heavily focused on Costner.

“Kevin didn’t like that, and he lunged at him [Bentley],” a source who was present told The Hollywood Reporter. “No fists were thrown, but they were in each other’s faces, pushing and shoving and just getting hot until they had to be separated.”

A spokesperson for Bentley seemingly confirmed that there arguments between the two, however didn’t share much else, other than the fact that it was a “work related argument during an emotional and physically tough scene.”

As of publication, no one from the cast has commented on the report, and it’s unclear if that altercation led to the unexpected departure of Costner in Season 5 of the show.

Does the ‘Yellowstone’ cast get along with Kelly Reilly?

Certain actors or actresses on the show have to dig deep for their performances, especially someone like Reilly, who brings to life the tough-as-nails Dutton daughter Beth. Over the years, her character has shown immense strength and a complete disregard for repercussions when it comes to defending her family and those she cares about. But is Reilly nearly as menacing as Beth? Her costars say no.

She is one of the sweetest people and sweetest actors,” said Wes Bentley, who plays her brother Jamie on the show, to Cinema Blend. “She has to go so far to get to Beth.” It’s good to know their on-screen hostility doesn’t translate to real life!

Hauser, Reilly’s on-screen hubby, also had nothing but good things to say about the actress, telling Cinema Blend,Working with her on this relationship has just been so much fun.”

Does the ‘Yellowstone’ cast get along with Cole Hauser?

Hauser plays the ever-so-lovable Rip, and the proof is in the pudding that he’s just as lovely in real-life as he is on TV.

We work really hard, and we both have a lot of fondness for each other as people,” said his fictional wife Kelly Reilly in an interview with LA Times. “We’re both happily married people and we’re in a playing field of complete safety and respect.”

What about Luke Grimes?

Grimes is another integral member of the cast, and his costars say working alongside him is a treat. Asbille, who plays his wife Monica, has shared that trust and comfort are what make things work when playing these characters. “It’s a wonderful partnership,” she told Looper.

It’s safe to say that this cast has a lot of love for each other, and we can’t wait to see how things play out for the Duttons in the new spinoff shows Y: Marshals and Dutton Ranch.
