Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman Unite for Civil War Epic The Gray House
Kevin Costner is heading back to the small screen, and this time he’s not alone. Teaming up with fellow Hollywood powerhouse Morgan Freeman, the Yellowstone star is set to bring audiences a gripping new series on Prime Video in early 2026.
A Story Hidden in History
The Gray House shines a spotlight on the forgotten women of the American Civil War. Based on true events, the eight-part drama follows a group of daring female spies—a Virginia socialite, her mother, a formerly enslaved ally, and the city’s most infamous courtesan. Together, they transform an underground railroad into a secret spy network, operating deep in Confederate territory. Their courage and sacrifice prove crucial in changing the course of the war.
A Cast Full of Firepower
The series boasts a cast as ambitious as its story. Mary-Louise Parker (The West Wing), Daisy Head (Harlots), breakout star Amethyst Davis (Kindred), and veteran actor Ben Vereen (Roots) lead the charge. They are joined by Paul Anderson, Ian Duff, Hannah James, Robert Knepper, Christopher McDonald, Colin Morgan, Rob Morrow, Colin O’Donoghue, Sam Trammell, Ewan Miller, and Keith David.
Powerhouse Creators Behind the Scenes
Costner and Freeman aren’t the only legends attached. Leslie Greif, best known for Hatfields & McCoys, co-wrote the series alongside Darrell Fetty and acclaimed filmmaker John Sayles. Oscar-nominated director Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields, The Mission) takes the helm for all eight episodes, ensuring the drama delivers both scale and intimacy.
Music That Matches the Drama
The soundtrack promises to be just as bold as the story itself. Country icon Willie Nelson contributes an original track, while Shania Twain, Killer Mike, and Yolanda Adams bring their own artistry to the mix. Even rock legend Jon Bon Jovi steps in, co-writing a song for the series.
A War Reimagined
Early promotional art already teases the tension ahead—spycraft in shadowed rooms, divided loyalties, and brutal clashes between Confederate and Union forces. With Costner and Freeman guiding the project, The Gray House is shaping up to be one of Prime Video’s most anticipated releases of 2026.
