Monica Raymund’s True Reason for Leaving Chicago Fire—And Why Dawson’s Return Isn’t Likely
From heartbreak to Hollywood, why Gabriela Dawson’s exit was more personal than plot-driven
Not a Script Decision—But a Life Shift
For six seasons, Monica Raymund’s Gabriela Dawson lit up Firehouse 51. She was fierce, passionate, and beloved by fans. So when Dawson suddenly left Chicago Fire in Season 6, it wasn’t just shocking—it felt abrupt.
The real reason, however, wasn’t rooted in a dramatic storyline or behind-the-scenes tension. It was something simpler: Raymund was ready for a new life.
Why She Walked Away
In a revealing interview with the Chicago Tribune, Raymund said her contract had ended—and so had her time in Chicago.
“I was hungry to explore a different role, a different story,” she explained.
“I had been in Chicago for five years… I was ready to create my home.”
Raymund had her sights set on Los Angeles—not just for new roles, but for personal growth and stability. Living in Chicago while filming took its toll, and when her contract expired, she chose freedom over familiarity.
The Writers Were Caught Off Guard
Despite notifying producers ahead of time, Raymund’s exit still left the Chicago Fire writers scrambling. Showrunner Derek Haas admitted to TVLine that he thought it was just a negotiation tactic.
“I didn’t think she really wasn’t coming back,” Haas said.
“In my head, it was just end-of-year negotiating.”
With little time to pivot, the writers sent Dawson off to Puerto Rico. Her exit came after a heartbreaking arc involving failed attempts to start a family with Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer). She returned briefly in Seasons 7 and 8—but it was clear her main story had ended.
Life After Firehouse 51
Monica Raymund hasn’t looked back—and she hasn’t needed to. She landed the lead in Hightown on Starz, showcasing a gritty, complex performance as Jackie Quiñones. Beyond acting, she’s found success directing hit shows like Dexter: Resurrection, one of 2025’s biggest thrillers.
Even with her flourishing career, Raymund still holds Chicago Fire close.
“It was an honor to play Gabriela Dawson,” she posted.
“I’ll always be proud to have played a fierce paramedic with such an incredible cast and crew.”
