The Season 20 premiere of TLC’s Sister Wives continued to unpack family divisions and conflicting stories, but fans couldn’t stop talking about one heart-wrenching scene involving Kody Brown’s daughter.

Madison Brown Brush appeared in a scene alongside her mother, Janelle Brown, and husband Caleb Brush to discuss her father, Kody Brown‘s, parenting skills. She teared up when discussing the current state of their relationship.

“You want your dad to show up. You want reconciliation. I know I played a part, and I’m angry because I’m still trying to learn to not be disappointed,” Brush said as reported by E! News.

“I’m still learning how to just see him for who he is,” she continued. “I’m trying to understand that maybe he didn’t know how to show up. He might be hurting.” In contrast, Brown told TLC’s cameras that his children want to reconcile on their terms only. He added that he would love to move forward in those relationships, but he’s since “compartmentalized” his “heartbreak.”

Brush previously discussed the boundaries she set regarding her relationship with her father in a November 2024 episode of her former podcast, The Authentic Society. “I’m a straight shooter. You ask me a question, I’m going to tell you what I think. And [my dad] would get very angry when I would be like, ‘I don’t know why you’re surprised here.’”

“So that was one of the reasons I went no contact. He didn’t like a mirror being held up.”

Fans called out Kody Brown’s behavior toward his older children

Maddie Brown Brush’s hurt over her relationship with her father didn’t go unnoticed by Sister Wives fans, who compared and contrasted Kody Brown’s lack of a relationship with his older children versus the relationships with the kids he shares with Robyn Brown.

On Reddit, fans called out Brown’s behavior towards his older children. He has said on-camera that he expects adult relationships with his children to be reciprocal and that he will not continuously reach out to them if they do not respond.

However, his ex-wives Christine Brown and Janelle Brown, as well as current wife Robyn, have said on different occasions that, as a parent, Kody needs to take the initiative with his children and not always expect them to make the first move. Redditors agree.

“I feel so bad for the pain his first 13 kids must feel. I can’t imagine,” wrote one viewer. A second penned, “My heart is sooo broken for the kids!!!! [Maddie] didn’t have the responsibility to mend the relationship with her father! That’s all on Kody as the father! He only wants healing cuz he wants to be told he didn’t do anything wrong.”

A third Redditor believes, “Maddie is absolutely breaking my heart while she’s talking about Kody. These poor kids.” A fourth fan responded, “It’s so clear from the opening scene of Kody getting Robyn’s kids ready for school that he does know ‘how to show up’ for his kids.”

‘Sister Wives’ flashback scenes tell a different story

As Kody Brown discussed the current state of his relationships with his older children, a flashback scene to the series’ early days shone a spotlight on how involved he was as a parent to his then-13 children with wives Meri Brown, Janelle, and Christine Brown.

He noted that with each wife on a different schedule, mornings were particularly challenging. The vintage clip focused on Logan Brown, Janelle and Kody’s older son, making breakfast for all his younger siblings every morning and making sure they left on time.

Kody claimed he had work early in the morning, but according to his rotating schedule, documented in the book Becoming Sister Wives, he also may have been with another wife. However, a Season 1, Episode 1, TikTok clip shows how hard Logan, 15, had to work each day as a parental substitute before he got himself ready for school.

It appeared Logan had that responsibility every day, whether or not Kody stayed at Janelle’s home. This is in direct contrast to Kody’s life with Robyn, where he was seen in the first episode of Season 20 making his kids breakfast and brushing his son Solomon’s hair ahead of school
