What’s Next for Chicago Fire’s Kidd and Severide After Baby Heartbreak?
A Devastating Update
The Chicago Fire season 14 premiere delivered a gut-wrenching twist for Stellaride fans. After the season 13 finale hinted at Stella Kidd’s pregnancy, the truth came crashing down in episode one. Doctors revealed that Kidd had miscarried only a week after taking her test.
While reassured that her health won’t prevent a future pregnancy, Kidd was visibly shaken. She broke down, apologizing to Severide for sharing the news too soon. But Severide, as always, stood firmly by her side: “We’re in this together. Every step of the way.”
Shifting Gears on Parenthood
This wasn’t the couple’s first heartbreak. Last season, their adoption plans fell apart at the last minute. With both a miscarriage and failed adoption weighing heavily on them, Kidd and Severide began questioning whether they should pause their plans for a family.
But in a surprise turn, Terry — who once oversaw their failed adoption — returned with a new possibility. Instead of a baby, he asked whether they’d consider fostering a teenager about to be removed from a group home. The episode ended with the couple stunned, leaving fans with a major new storyline to anticipate.
Showrunner Teases New Family Direction
Series showrunner Andrea Newman explained that Kidd’s own history makes this storyline especially personal. Having lost her parents as a teenager and being raised by her aunt, Kidd’s fears about parenting have lingered beneath the surface.
“When she finds out the pregnancy hasn’t stayed around, she’s carrying guilt because she knew she wasn’t 100 percent in the way that Severide was,” Newman told Us Weekly.
The new fostering storyline will allow the writers to explore a different path to parenthood for the couple. “They had one story in their head of what family was going to look like, and now a new story is going to be written for them,” Newman teased.
Love Tested, Family Reimagined
For Kidd and Severide, love has never been in question — but their journey to becoming parents is proving anything but simple. With obstacles at every turn, the couple must learn that family doesn’t always follow the plan.
Whether through fostering, adoption, or pregnancy, Stellaride’s road to parenthood promises more challenges, heartbreaks, and hope in the episodes ahead.
