Series showrunner Andrea Newman explained that Kidd’s own history makes this storyline especially personal. Having lost her parents as a teenager and being raised by her aunt, Kidd’s fears about parenting have lingered beneath the surface.

“When she finds out the pregnancy hasn’t stayed around, she’s carrying guilt because she knew she wasn’t 100 percent in the way that Severide was,” Newman told Us Weekly.

The new fostering storyline will allow the writers to explore a different path to parenthood for the couple. “They had one story in their head of what family was going to look like, and now a new story is going to be written for them,” Newman teased.
