Why Carver Deserves a Comeback in Chicago Fire—Not Just Ritter
Heartbreak, unfinished love, and a disappearing firefighter: Firehouse 51 needs resolution
The Departures That Rocked Season 14
Chicago Fire launched its fourteenth season with emotional upheaval and major cast exits. Among those gone are Damon (Michael Bradway), Carver (Jake Lockett), and Ritter (Daniel Kyri)—three characters whose absence has left fans reeling. While Damon’s exit was explained by a scheduling conflict, Carver and Ritter were casualties of budget cuts.
Ritter, however, is getting the chance to say goodbye properly. In the premiere episode “Kicking Down Doors,” we see him in New York, sitting beside ex-boyfriend Dwayne after a traumatic shooting. Showrunner Andrea Newman later confirmed Ritter’s exit is only temporary. He’ll return later in Season 14, albeit in a guest role.
But while Ritter’s departure is being handled with care and emotional weight, Carver’s story was cut off far too soon—and without real closure.
Carver’s Exit Feels Rushed, Confusing, and Unfair
Carver’s departure from Firehouse 51 stunned viewers. After building up his arc for two seasons, culminating in a long-awaited kiss and love confession to Violet Mikami, he was simply… gone. The Season 13 finale hinted he was considering a transfer to Denver, but by the time Season 14 began, he had already left—with no scenes, no goodbyes, and no follow-up.
What’s worse? Violet and Carver have completely cut contact. A relationship teased for over a season vanished without a trace. It’s an unearned break in continuity that’s left fans angry and confused.
Ritter Gets Closure—But What About Carver?
No one’s disputing that Ritter deserves a proper send-off. Daniel Kyri has been with the show for several seasons, and his character’s bond with his 51 family has earned its place in the narrative. But it’s hard not to notice the imbalance: Ritter gets a goodbye arc, while Carver’s sudden absence is brushed off in a line of dialogue.
Carver’s journey—from quiet loner to loyal teammate, to romantic partner—was cut short just as it was finally getting interesting. The audience didn’t get closure, and neither did Violet.
There’s Still Hope
Despite no confirmed plans for Carver’s return, there’s still a window. Jake Lockett could reprise the role, even briefly, to wrap up loose ends or give Violet and Carver a meaningful conclusion. Whether he returns for a one-off episode or longer arc, Chicago Fire owes the character—and the fans—resolution.
