Y: Marshals Cast Revealed — Brecken Merrill Returns as Tate Dutton, But Where’s Monica?

The Yellowstone universe is far from over. CBS has officially confirmed major casting news for Y: Marshals, the upcoming spinoff centered on Kayce Dutton, and one familiar face stands out: Brecken Merrill is back as Tate Dutton. Yet, one name was missing from the announcement — Kelsey Asbille, who played Monica Dutton.

Kayce Dutton’s New Role

Luke Grimes reprises his role as Kayce, leaving behind the Yellowstone Ranch for a new chapter as a U.S. Marshal in Montana. The series follows him as he blends his Navy SEAL training with his cowboy instincts, serving as a last line of defense in the region’s escalating war on violence.

Grimes himself admitted he was skeptical when first approached with the idea, but once he heard the pitch, he knew fans would be hooked. “The idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting, and it really roped me in,” he told People.

Returning Dutton Family Members

Joining Grimes is Brecken Merrill, reprising his role as Tate, Kayce’s son. Tate’s presence confirms that the family legacy will remain at the heart of the story, even as Kayce embarks on a dangerous new mission. Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty are also set to return as Thomas Rainwater and Mo, maintaining ties to the Broken Rock Reservation storyline.

Where Is Monica?

The biggest question mark surrounds Monica Dutton. Played by Kelsey Asbille throughout Yellowstone, Monica’s absence from the casting reveal raises speculation. With Kayce still married to Monica at the end of Yellowstone and the couple selling the ranch to return the land to Broken Rock, her storyline feels far from finished.

It’s possible her return is being held back as a surprise, but for now, fans will have to wait and see if Monica appears in Y: Marshals.

New Additions to the Cast

The spinoff also introduces several new faces:

  • Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, a military friend from Kayce’s past

  • Arielle Kebbel as Belle

  • Ash Santos as Andrea

  • Tatanka Means as Miles

Together, these characters form part of the Marshal team, tasked with bringing justice to the rugged Montana frontier. Brett Cullen will appear in a recurring role as Harry Gifford, head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.

Release and Creative Team

Y: Marshals is set for a spring 2026 premiere, airing Sundays at 9/8c on CBS before heading to streaming. Spencer Hudnut (SEAL Team) serves as showrunner, with Greg Yaitanes directing the pilot. Taylor Sheridan remains connected as an executive producer but has handed daily creative control to Hudnut.

Why Kayce Gets His Own Spinoff

While Yellowstone’s finale seemed to close Kayce’s story with peace and resolution, Sheridan and the network weren’t ready to let him go. Grimes admitted saying goodbye to Kayce felt like saying goodbye to family, and fans felt the same. Y: Marshals is designed to expand Kayce’s journey, showing how his sense of duty clashes with his desire to protect his family.
